Deadly Bacteria Found at Factory

In Phoenix, Arizona there was a recall of peanut butter. The peanut butter was contaminated with Salmonella. This is a bacteria that is harmful to animals. It is due to poor handling and processing at the plant where the peanut butter is found. The peanut butter was then shipped to other parts of the U.S. where the dangerous bacteria spread.

In the tri state area many zoos which received the peanut butter were affected. The two largest zoos, The Philadelphia Zoo and the Children's Zoo of New Jersey both had elephants that became sick after eating the poisonous peanut butter. Vets and zoo keepers worked hard to find a treatment to save them. Oddly, they discovered that candy canes can be used to treat Salmonella poisoning. They believe that the peppermint oil found in the candy helps to destroy the harmful bacteria. Luckily, the elephants recovered quickly.

The Phoenix peanut butter factory owned by Cindy Snake was fined 3 million dollars. She apologized to the public and praised those involved in saving the elephants. She promised to clean the peanut butter plant so that no other animals would be hurt again. She also said she would give free peanut butter for a year to the zoos that had animals that got sick. After that accident and its clean up there were no more problems with the factory.
